How SERVPRO Removes Debris in Fire Damaged Tucson Homes

Does Fire Debris Removal in Tucson Homes Benefit Mitigation?

Debris removal is one of the emergency services that our SERVPRO professionals can offer to fire-damaged Tucson homes. While it might improve the aesthetics and jumpstart the cleaning of your house after this disaster, many homeowners do not understand the real advantages of fire debris removal for other processes that need completing to restore a property.

Mitigation is a crucial phase of recovery after fire damage in Tucson homes. The more efficient and effective we can make this stage of our work, the better able to protect structural elements, contents, and the personal belongings of our customers. Fire loss incidents can be devastating, especially when mitigation cannot begin as quickly as it should. Fire debris removal can help this process in multiple areas.

Reducing Soot and Contaminants

Soot can be a hazardous presence in a household after a fire. With its particles being microscopic, only sophisticated devices we use with HEPA filtration can capture the circulating particulates. Removing fire debris might initially agitate this effect but can ultimately remove many sources of circulating particles.

Reducing Harsh Odors

While our SERVPRO professionals have multiple deodorization tools and products that can help to gain control of lingering scents after a fire loss, charred remnants and debris can remain a catalyst for the smell to stay. Removing sources of noxious odors can make later deodorization more efficient.

Exposing Vulnerabilities and Concerns

Structural weaknesses and compromised areas of your property are not always visible and easily identified by even our experienced technicians. By shoveling out piles of debris and ash, we can get a better look at potential structural concerns to address them accordingly. With a full team of licensed general contractors, we can address these exposed construction vulnerabilities right away.

Every action that our SERVPRO of Oro Valley / Marana East team takes after a fire loss incident helps to manage damaging effects and work towards returning the property to preloss condition. No matter how we can help, from debris removal through other fire recovery practices and cleanup, give us a call today at (520) 620-9700.

Mitigating Kitchen Water Damage in a Tucson Home

Water damage can be frustrating for any homeowner to clean and restore on their own. In 2017, the total amount of insurance payouts made from water damage alone was $13 billion, with average claim costs estimated at $10,000. On top of that, water damage affects an average of one out of 50 homeowners each year. Water-affected kitchens can be very tricky to clean, especially if pipe leaks or other maladies happen behind or underneath large appliances or cabinets.

If you need rapid mitigation for water damage in your Tucson residence, there is help available. Certified SERVPRO professionals are just a phone call away from restoring your home to its preloss condition. This team is trained in water damage mitigation tactics, including disinfection with EPA-registered antimicrobials, drying with centrifugal air movers and industrial-grade dehumidifiers, and restoring your kitchen with the help of licensed contractors as needed. When you choose SERVPRO for your disaster cleanup needs, you get a comprehensive service that minimizes long-term structural issues for your home.

Tips for Filing Claims

  • Record extensive proof of water-damaged possessions. This documentation can include itemized lists, photos, videos, and other records. Include serial numbers, makes and models, and monetary value where possible.
  • Avoid throwing unsalvageable items away until after the insurance adjuster has seen them.
  • Do the same extensive documentation for structural damages, including warped or crumbling drywall, soft spots in flooring, or wet subfloors.
  • Wait until you have express approval from your insurance provider before commencing with home repairs. Doing this before you have approval from your provider can make it much more difficult to be compensated for damages to your home.
  • Go over your insurance policy to ensure that it covers the extent of damage your home has incurred.

How SERVPRO Saves the Day

The Right Commercial Water Removal Efforts Ensure Tucson Offices Remain Open

12/31/2019 (Permalink)

A man dressed in a tie holding a laptop, sitting on a life raft floating in water. SERVPRO knows how important it is to keep your Tuscon office up and moving, let us assist you. Don’t leave yourself or your employees in the deep end.

Let us help ensure your Tucson office stays up and moving after your water damage.

The modern office is made with convenience in mind. Many features, including the perfectly finished walls, carpeted floors, fancy ceilings, and comfortable furniture, are meant to spur maximum productivity. However, in the case of water loss incidents, the same features that offer convenience can prove problematic to address. In many cases, commercial water removal requires professional assistance.

The point of intrusion affects the steps needed for commercial water removal in affected Tucson offices. An overhead intrusion point, such as when a pipe bursts in the ceiling or fire suppression sprinklers malfunction, affects most parts of the office. The water can collect in the ceiling leading to sagging or drip through the walls, leaving stains and leading to the deterioration of wall panels. Our SERVPRO technicians take immediate steps to remove any water that collects in the ceilings and walls. We drill weep-holes on the ceiling, starting close the walls then moving towards the center of the room.

If the water spills on office furniture such as chairs and desks or electronics such as computers, there is a need for quick action. In case the water is still dripping, our SERVPRO crews can provide plastic sheets to cover the contents shielding them from further harm. We also start drying procedures fast because extended moisture exposure for materials such as wood or fabrics leads to different forms of deterioration, including staining or even mold.

Water tends to collect on the floors where it can cause carpets to delaminate or seep below other floor coverings such as tiles where it can wreak havoc over time.  Our SERVPRO technicians prioritize the prevention of such secondary damage whenever possible. We use truck-mounted water extractors or other high-speed pumps to remove the water fast. We also perform drying procedures such as running air movers and dehumidifiers in the wet areas while checking the moisture levels constantly to ensure we remove all excess moisture left by the incident, "Like it never even happened."

Water loss incidents in the workplace are highly disruptive. Call SERVPRO of Oro Valley / Marana East at (520) 620-9700 to help restore normalcy. We are available 24/7.

How Professionals Approach Water Damage Restoration in Tucson

12/30/2019 (Permalink)

Thunderstorm warning sign Tucson experiences flooding during monsoon season. When the storm waters enter your home, call us for complete and fast remediation.

Critical Decisions to Make During Flood Damage Cleanup in Your Tucson Home

Flooding occurs regularly in the Tucson area. It can occur during either of the two main rainy seasons, which are winter and the monsoon season. Floodwater can cause significant destruction to your home and belongings. You need to hire a flood damage restoration company like SERVPRO to perform the cleanup.

Speeding up the restoration process helps prevent costly destruction and a problem like mold growth before it harms your health. If you experience flood damage in your Tucson home, our crew can take the right steps to restore your property. We can examine the extent of the destruction and identify hazards to protect anyone present on the job site. Some risks we look out for include:

  • Contaminated water
  • Inadequate lighting hazards
  • Overhead hazards like water-filled ceilings that could collapse
  • Electrical shock hazards that can occur when water intrudes electrical systems
  • Trip, slip, and fall hazards that can happen because of damp floors

Our crew can also inspect the ruined items to determine which ones are salvageable. We can discard the unsalvageable items and restore the salvageable ones professionally. Some things that need discarding include:

Carpets

If flood water saturated the carpets, our technicians remove them together with the wooden baseboards, tack strips, and padding. These items need to be discarded to prevent microbial growth.

Linoleum or vinyl tiles

If flooding has affected your linoleum or vinyl tiles, they can become curled, and therefore, they need removing. Also, if there is a wood floor under the tiles, we can remove them to ensure that the wood dries.

Plaster or drywall

We check whether the plaster or drywall encountered floodwater. If saturated, we discard it instead of attempting to restore it. We also use our expertise to determine up to what height the plaster or drywall needs removing. For example, if the flooding reached a height of 2.5 feet on the wall, we can remove the plaster or drywall to a height of 4 feet.

Wall insulation

We carefully examine the insulation to make an informed decision of whether to discard or restore it. For example, insulation made of foam plastic is unnecessary to remove. Our SERVPRO crew can leave it in place to dry. If the insulation is fibrous, we can discard it.

Our technicians can extract the floodwater from your property, clean and disinfect the affected surfaces and materials. We can also dry the affected areas thoroughly. Our goal when performing flood cleanup is to get your home back to its preloss condition so you can get back to normal.

SERVPRO of Oro Valley / Marana East has the expertise required to deal with emergency flooding in homes. Contact us anytime at (520) 620-9700 for flood cleanup services in Oro Valley, Marana, or Catalina. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Don’t Try to Handle Water Removal in Your Tucson Home Alone

water damaged wood flooring Make sure not to delay when the wood flooring in your home sustains damage.  Call SERVPRO right away.

Following Correct Solutions during Water Removal in Tucson to Save Hardwood Floor Surfaces

The cost of fixing water spills in rooms with hardwood flooring can balloon if the floor is damaged irreparably. Solid wood is semi-porous, so fast action can help save the floor even when exposed to significant amounts of water. However, extended exposure leads to buckling, crowning, and other changes on the floorboards ruining the floor completely. Professional water removal can help salvage your floor.

Several steps are necessary to accomplish water removal from your Tucson property, saving the floor in the process. Wet-vacuuming when there is a significant amount of water or wiping with towels or mops for smaller amounts should help deal with standing water. When wet vacuuming, our SERVPRO technicians use hard surface squeegees to avoid scratching the surface in the process of water removal.

Wet-vacuuming and wiping remove only the water on the surface, so other steps are necessary to complete the process. Our SERVPRO technicians use specialized hardwood drying mats connected to a portable or truck-mounted water extractor. Depending on the size of the area, several mats might be necessary for us to dry the area fast enough. We determine the time to lay a mat on the floor depending on the tightness of the floorboard arrangement, the volume of water present, and the polyurethane level. Typically, it takes five minutes for a mat to dry a specific section of the floor. Our drying specialists monitor the process continuously, occasionally lifting the mats off to wipe off visible water with a towel.

In cases where considerable time lapses with the floor submerged, a unique drying approach may be necessary to pull all the moisture from the wood grains in a controlled manner to prevent problems such as cracking, buckling, or cupping. We set up drying chambers over the floor using plastic sheets.

Saving the hardwood floor of your home can reduce the cost of restoration by a significant percentage. Call SERVPRO of Oro Valley / Marana East at (520) 620-9700 to help. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

flooded kitchen and hallway. A plumbing leak caused flooding in this home. We used the arsenal of equipment at our disposal to remove the water and completely restore the home.

A Guide to Dealing With Water Damage in Your Tucson Home

Coming home to the sight of soaked carpets, furniture, and flooded rooms because of a broken water pipe, washing machine overflow, or faulty tap may cause panic. Seeping water damage is pervasive and progressive. It can cause permanent damage to valuable household items, wooden floors, and electrical equipment if you delay emergency response beyond the first 48 hours. Secondary damage may also occur from mold growth on walls, staircases, and upholstered furniture.

To restore your Tucson home after water damage, you can take several steps to minimize the amount of long-term damage that could result. Start by shutting down electric power to reduce the risk of getting electrocuted while cleaning up the affected areas. You should also open the windows to ventilate your home and then try to remove excess water from floors with buckets or wet/dry vacuums. However, doing this may not remove all the water and moisture from your house. Therefore, you need to call an expert water restoration firm like SERVPRO.

Our firm has experienced professionals who are well trained and equipped to help you solve your water problem in a precise and efficient way. We have high-tech equipment to dry your home and de-humidify it to prevent mold infestation on walls, fabrics, and floors. Our technicians have Water Damage Restoration Technician (WRT) certification and can do several things to dry out your property.

We can extract water from floors using portable pumps or shop vacs. These extractors enable us to remove water effectively, even in hard-to-reach areas. We also remove water vapor in the air using dehumidifiers. Microbes are present in any water loss incident, whether gray, clean, or black. If you do not take care of the water intrusion quickly, microbes may cause one water damage category to deteriorate into a more contaminated category. For example, in a few days, clean water can turn into gray water. Our SERVPRO technicians respond quickly to water loss incidents to limit the damage. We reduce the humidity in a home to below 60% to prevent mold growth.

Our technicians also use moisture detecting equipment like thermal imaging cameras, moisture sensors, and moisture meters to check for hidden sources of moisture in walls and floors. We can then dry these areas to prevent mold growth and rust. Using the principles of applied structural drying (ASD), our technicians can ensure that your home is properly dried and restored to the condition it was in before the water intrusion incident occurred. We can also help you claim compensation from your insurance company for the damages.

How to prevent Moldy Carpets

10/3/2018 (Permalink)

Mold grows best with a certain amount of moisture in the air as well as certain temperature ranges. One way to help prevent mold growth on any surface in your home, including your carpets, is to ensure your humidity levels never reach 60%. And while it’s unlikely you like living in this warm of a house, make sure you don’t set the thermometer to 80 degrees.

Some areas of a home are just more prone to humidity and moisture. Like your bathroom, for instance. Every design aspect of your home should be done with appearance and functionality in mind, and that includes making sure you’re making smart decisions about the type of floor coverings to have in certain areas based on the area’s usage along with environmental aspects. When it comes to bathroom floors, and to a lesser extent basement floors, sometimes the smartest plan is to avoid carpets altogether.

Vacuuming your carpets regularly, along with having them professionally steam cleaned, can go along way in preventing mold growth. One of the components of rapid mold growth is food, and mold loves dirt, grime, food, and any other organic substance that can be found in your carpet fibers. Regularly cleaning your carpets is a great way to help reduce the likelihood of dealing with mold in the future!

Water Damaged Mattress

10/3/2018 (Permalink)

If your mattress as experienced water damage, you’re probably wondering if you can save it or if you just have to throw it out. Since a mattress is a big expense, you don’t want to just throw it away, but you also don’t want to deal with mold on the mattress that could make you sick.

As soon as you can, take immediate action to try and save your water damaged mattress. The longer you wait, the greater the chances of having to throw away the mattress are. The first thing you need to do is to see how wet the mattress is.

If it is completely soaked or was involved in a flood, you may not have any option but to throw it away. In some cases, you can call a professional water damage restoration company that may be able to save your mattress.

If the water damaged mattress wasn’t completely underwater, you may be able to clean and fix it yourself. We’ll walk you through the steps. Whether you hire a company to dry the mattress or do it yourself, you should treat the mattress within 24 hours to prevent mold.

Rent a wet-dry shop vacuum and use it over the entire mattress surface to suck up as much water as possible. You may want to do this several times until no water is coming up. Then cover the mattress with baking soda and work it into the surface by scrubbing it with a sponge. Baking soda will help absorb moisture, odors, and prevent mold.

Give the baking soda a few hours to work its magic and then vacuum it up. If the mattress is really wet, you can use cat litter in place of baking soda to absorb more moisture. Sprinkle it over the bed, work it in, let it set, and vacuum it up. Repeat either the baking soda or cat litter method until you feel like you’ve gotten as much moisture out as possible.
